Mark Richt reportedly fired at Georgia
Mark Richt coached at Georgia for 15 seasons.
It didn’t take long for Mark Richt to catch the eyes of other program’s looking for a new head coach. “Win the SEC and hopefully go beyond that”. While you are serving us, we are banging away this summer trying to get about 130 guys ready to play for the Georgia Bulldogs this fall. Beyond that, he said he’s not sure of his future plans, which might include a different role in the Georgia athletic department or possibly a coaching job at another school. Richt has been allowed to remain as coach through the team’s bowl game.
Chip Towers of Dawg Nation reported Richt’s ouster was entirely so the Bulldogs could pursue Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. He won two SEC championships and six SEC East division titles.
I would be surprised to see Richt jump right back in coaching this year and with this team.
Richt is 145-51 with two SEC championships. Getting rid of your coach is one way to try and change your outcome in the future, whether or not it will end up being the right move is up for debate. “There are jobs that we do and everybody has an opinion on it. If things don’t go the way people want them to go, I understand people being disappointed and thinking there’s a better way and I respect that”.
Smart, who is preparing for the SEC Championship game against Florida on Saturday, did not speak publicly to media members on Monday, and one of his players, Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland, said he hadn’t heard anything from Smart about another job.
McGarity said the he would begin the search for Richt’s replacement immediately. There is no denying that Richt is a strong recruiter, landing some of the top prospects in the country in his time at Georgia.
The reaction in the room was silence, Gause said, and Barchi provided no other details about the Flood decision or what would happen to the assistant coaches.
On a Sunday morning when I was fully expecting Les Miles to be fired at LSU, I find that the Bengal Tigers were keeping Miles and Georgia was firing their head coach after fifteen seasons.
During his 15-year stint in Athens, Richt has had incredible success.
“That remains to be between Mark and myself”, McGarity said. He’s not uber-rich by elite coaching standards, but he was earning more than $3 million per season at Georgia. The win left Richt 13-2 in the state rivalry.
Considered an outstanding offensive mind, Richt was first named the Bulldogs coach due to his adept handling of the Florida State offense as the school’s offensive coordinator.
“I always wanted to be a head coach”. I’ll never be bitter.
“On behalf of the University of Georgia Athletic Association and Bulldogs everywhere, I want to thank Mark and Katharyn for 15 years of remarkable service to the UGA community, hundreds of our students and staff, and to college football”, McGarity continued.
Richt defenders felt like their guy made up for any shortfalls as a coach with the way he carried himself and represented his university.
