Mark Richt Won’t Coach Georgia in Bowl Game
“He will do a wonderful, wonderful job down here”, the trustee said.
Richt was sacked after 15 seasons as Georgia’s head coach Sunday and held an exit news conference Monday. He informed the team Thursday afternoon.
Richt, who was a star quarterback at Boca Raton High, graduated from UM in 1982 after backing up Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly in the early 1980s. Richt went 145-51 in 15 seasons at Georgia. Names that have been brought up as potential candidates are Dan Mullen, the current head coach at Mississippi State, Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford, Golden, and former Texas head coach Mack Brown.
But critics say he hasn’t won any SEC titles lately, and can’t get over the Alabama hump. “That’s what he’ll do”. He’s been around. He knows who to hire, and he’ll have great coordinators because we are spending the money this time. Plus, recruiting season is in full swing, and Richt would have to be cleared by Miami’s compliance office before he can represent the institution.
Boeheim, the head coach since 1976, was to be suspended for the team’s first nine ACC games and the school loses three scholarships per year through 2018-19 as punishment for infractions that occurred with the men’s basketball program over the past 10 years.
Miami spent more than five weeks searching for a new permanent coach, and reached out to Richt – “to gauge interest”, he said – shortly after Al Golden was sacked in October.
While his accomplishments and successes at the University of Georgia are well documented, here are some lesser known fun facts about Richt. Richt will become the program’s fourth permanent coach since 2000.
Alabama running back Derrick Henry, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey and Iowa cornerback Desmond King are the five finalists for the Walter Camp player of the year award.
The Hurricanes finished the regular season 4-1 under interim coach Larry Scott, who is still slated to coach Miami’s bowl game. I miss calling plays. “I think splitting between would have been hard for me to do”.
ATLANTA – Georgia’s coaching search could be headed for a swift end, but the school was tight-lipped Wednesday about its progress and scheduled no announcement about who would succeed football coach Mark Richt. Eason took an official visit to Florida after Georgia let go of Richt, and Rivals.com reports that Miami is a contender to land the top prospect.
