Mark Trumbo: Heyman: O’s have interest in trade for Trumbo
The Colorado Rockies have had discussions with the Seattle Mariners revolving around first baseman/outfielder Mark Trumbo, according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
The 30-year-old Trumbo is expected to make in the $8-9 million range next season in his final year of arbitration. There’s a chance we could see a resolution by Wednesday’s non-tender deadline.
The former 18th-round draft pick hit at least 29 home runs in every season from 2011-2013 with the Los Angeles Angels, and he is coming off of a 22-homer campaign, 13 of which came after the Mariners picked him up in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. That decision, which must be made by 10 p.m. MT on Wednesday, is going to be a tough one for the Mariners, who would obviously prefer to get something in return for Trumbo rather than losing him altogether (or, perhaps, even instead of re-signing him to a smaller deal). As Trumbo appears to be lined up to prevent free agency by being tendered by the Mariners, the Orioles would have to strike a deal to acquire him in the event they desperately need to fill voids on their roster. According to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding, the Rockies have lost some interest in Trumbo since first throwing their hat in the ring but it remains possible that a “new and separate round of talks” could occur between the teams. He also has experience in the outfield, where the Rockies could wind up a bit shorthanded if they decide to trade Carlos Gonzalez this offseason.
CBSSports.com first reported that the Orioles were interested in Trumbo.
Any number of teams could use a right-handed power bat of Trumbo’s ilk, but the Rockies certainly make a ton of sense due to a number of factors.
In the 2015 season, Ben Paulsen looked good at first base, hitting 11 home runs, 19 doubles and driving in 49 runs for the Rockies in just 325 at-bats.
