Zuckerberg said Facebook was going through a “rough patch” and was on the verge of being sold when his “guru” and Apple’s former CEO Steve Jobs asked “me to visit a temple in India”.
Recounting his interactions with US State Department officials many years ago, he said that in 1993 when he mentioned to them that India was afflicted with terrorism, they refused to acknowledge it as terror and insisted it was only a law and order problem. “If I have to achieve that target, India will have to focus on three areas-agriculture, services and manufacturing”.
PM Modi highlights the importance of social media in catalysing a wide range of functions-economic growth to improving governance and diplomacy. In this context, he said the internet and social media has been playing an important role in improving governance and diploamcy. But normally, guides are better than the textbooks.
“When I adopted social media, I never knew I would be the chief minister or Prime Minister”.
“I’m not very educated, wasn’t that lucky”. It changed my thought process. But the power of social media is such that instantly you get to know what is wrong.
“If the government is aware, it can take corrective measures with this real time information”. Earlier, the communication was between countries.
“The 3 Ds are our unique strengths – demographic dividend, democracy and demand”, Modi said.
Modi was also shown a zoom-in picture of the Ganga river in Varanasi via Google Earth. “India has 600,000 villages and 250,000 gram panchayats”.
“By the time, you realise that, the five years (term) is over”. “Technology has really helped the industry and has brought the world together”, Modi said. Many youngsters in their 20s had come from India to participate in it.
“It is my dream to convert Indian economy into Dollars 20 trillion from the present USD 8 trillion”, Modi said in presence of the audience, which mostly constituted of Indians.
But Mantri said Modi was also determined to tell large multinationals that India is a friendly environment for global business. “We have brought in a new level of confidence”.
With India set to overtake the U.S.as the world’s second biggest smartphone market – behind China – in 2017, all smartphone manufacturers will be keen to establish a presence in this market, but with local players like Karbonn, Micromax and Lava.
