Mark Zuckerberg To Gift 99% Of His Facebook Shares To Charity
Mark Zuckerberg, announced the birth of his daughter with wife Priscilla Chan on Tuesday, December 01, 2015. “Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.” they continue.
In a letter to the baby who he lovingly addresses as Max posted on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg said: “We’re so happy to welcome our daughter Max into this world”.
“We will give 99% of our Facebook shares – now about 45 billion dollars – during our lives to join many others in improving this world for the next generation”. Thank you for all your love and support through our pregnancy. “By starting at a young age, we hope to see compounding benefits throughout our lives”, Zuckerberg said. “You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in”, he wrote. “But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others”, Zuckerberg said.
‘Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today, ‘ it says.
“If our generation connects them, we can lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty”.
“Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today”.
“Having a child has made us think of all the things that should be improved for [Max’s] generation”. The couple outlined some of the advancements and good that is being done in the world before highlighting how issues like disease could be solved.
They said: “This mission – advancing human potential and promoting equality – will require a new approach for all working towards these goals”. They added: “We must make long term investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years”.
The pledge is remarkable given Zuckerberg’s relative youth – he’s 31 – and because he’s still at the apex of his career running Facebook, a prosperous tech giant that powers the world’s most popular social network and boasts a $300 billion market cap. “We understand you’ll have many questions about why and how we’re doing this”.
“But together we can succeed and create a more equal world”.
Zuckerberg said he will remain CEO of Facebook for “many, many years to come”, and Facebook said he is expected to be the controlling stockholder of the company for the “foreseeable future”.
“Your mother and I don’t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future”.
“Love, Mom and Dad”.
