Mark Zuckerberg unveils his daughter, says he’s donating 99% of his FB
“Priscilla and I are so happy to welcome our daughter Max into this world!”
The new was announced in a open letter from Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Dr. Priscilla Chan to their new daughter, Max, on Facebook.
In an intimate Facebook post that rocketed across global headlines earlier this year, Zuckerberg announced that he and his wife had tried for years to have a child.
“You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in”, it added.
“As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation”, posted the 31-year-old. The Facebook CEO’s plan to do this is through philanthropy – Zuckerberg has pledged to donate 99 per cent of his shares to charity throughout his lifetime.
“Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities”, said the Harvard University dropout.
“We will give 99% of our Facebook shares – now about $45 billion – during our lives to advance this mission”, he wrote.
Ending the lengthy letter on a sentimental note, Zuckerberg wished his daughter a life filled with hope and joy.
The move echoes that of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda who have set up a foundation to do good around the world.
“For your generation to live in a better world, there is so much more our generation can do”, they wrote.
They said: “This mission – advancing human potential and promoting equality – will require a new approach for all working towards these goals”.
Zuckerberg promised to release more details in the future.
“Today, most people die from five things – heart disease, cancer, stroke, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases – and we can make faster progress on these and other problems”.
In the letter to baby Max, the couple express their hopes that she will grow up in a world that is better than the one we’re in at the moment, saying they will do their part to make that happen “not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation”.
Beginning with the new year, dads working full-time for Facebook anywhere in the world will have the option of taking four months’ paid leave.
