Marlon Byrd: Traded To The Giants
Bochy was thrilled to add Byrd to a Giants lineup that definitely needed to be bolstered after the loss of Pence. San Francisco sits two games back of the Dodgers in the NL West, and three games behind the Cubs for the second wild-card spot. Recent injuries have plagued numerous outfielders in San Franciscoas Angel Pagan, Hunter Pence and Nori Aoki have been on the disabled list at some point this season.
“I’m excited”, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
The trade ultimately makes sense for the Reds, as the 37-year-old Byrd wasn’t going to be a part of their future. In 2013, he joined the Pittsburgh Pirates before the September 1 postseason roster deadline and batted. 237 with 19 home runs and a. 735 on-base plus slugging percentage in 388 plate appearances.
Byrd’s stint with the Reds was a brief one, having been traded to the club from the Philadelphia Phillies in December for pitcher Ben Lively. A statistical bugaboo: He has walked 109 batters in his career as a short reliever. In 44 relief appearances this season at Class AA Richmond he went 3-0, 3.41 (58ip, 45h, 29bb, 68k). According to Walt Jocketty, he’ll report to AA Pensacola. “He throws mid-90s. Pretty good breaking ball”.
The Jackson, Michigan, native is in his sixth season in professional baseball and was hitting. 257 with 17 doubles, a triple, eight homers, and 18 RBIs.
July may have come and gone, but the Cincinnati Reds aren’t done with their “reboot” quite yet, as outfielder Marlon Byrd is on the move. The Reds have Brennan Boesch and Jason Bourgeois in the majors, both who could play left, while LaMarre could see time in center with Billy Hamilton on the disabled list.
