Marner, others, cut from Maple Leafs roster
Among the invitees at camp, Boyes had the strongest recent numbers, having scored 14 goals and 38 points last season. Boyes also has a unique connection to Toronto. He never saw a game with the Blue and White as he was traded to the San Jose Sharks (along with Alyn McCauley and a first rounder) for Owen Nolan. In two preseason games, he looked adequate, but it was evident the transition to the National Hockey League would take a few time. The 26-year-old blueliner was traded by the Leafs to Tampa Bay in February 2012 for Carter Ashton and spent 2+ seasons with the Lightning before playing 33 games with Edmonton last season.
Goalie Rob Madore was reassigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. Marner will get a chance to do the same.
Everyone already knows that many, if not all, of the Leaf veterans who played on the team last year will make it again this year.
The buzz regarding potential interest in New Jersey center Travis Zajac continues, as the Newark Star-Ledger’s Rich Chere indicates it is no secret that Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello would like to acquire the 30-year-old center and has discussed several potential deals with Devils GM Ray Shero.
While the Boyes reports is wonderful for Leafs followers, even though, it’s also a lttle bit odd – despite the fact that he’s essentially shifting from the Panthers towards the Leafs, essentially the Leafs’ roster actors from before years is likely living in the Panthers. Instead, the 18-year-old forward will head back to London where he can work on his game. The young college standout was acquired by the Maple Leafs in a trade with the Florida Panthers.
He has the reach, smarts and size to go along with his excellent possession numbers.
