Rekha Nambiar, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), who is leading a relief team of more than 1,800 men in the state, said crews were carrying out relief work after flood waters started receding, with the focus on potable water.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said that the relief help will be deposited in bank accounts of beneficiaries and aid-in-kind like rice, dhoti and sari will be distributed through Public Distribution system stores, she said.
Torrential rains have lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu including state capital Chennai, severely affecting life and disrupting communications and transport system. Many people are facing so many troubles due to floods and some people even don’t have food and residence also.
Hundreds of flood-hit cars and motorcycles remained piled up in the streets of Chennai, which were coated with a thick layer of mud. “More than 80 per cent of flight services have resumed”, Chennai airport director Deepak Shastri said. Mobile and fixed phone networks have been sporadic. The state government has brought in workers from other districts for this goal.
Given the “extraordinarily heavy devastation caused by the floods”, she said the liberal measures suggested by her for insurance companies and banks would enable the flood affected families rebuild their lives.
Radhakrishnan, the health secretary, said Saturday that while the immediate rescue operations were tapering off, the main focus of the administration in the coming days will be to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
“None of the politicians or volunteers have approached us for the past couple of days”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the floods as a effect of climate change, as top negotiators meet in Paris to try to agree on reducing the rate of global warming.
India suffers severe flooding every year during the annual monsoon rains from June to September.
