Marshall, Stewart fined for hits on Newton

Denver safety Darian Stewart was fined $18,231, and linebacker Brandon Marshall was levied a $24,309 fine.
The fines came one day after the NFL’s director of officiating, Dean Blandino, offered an explanation for Newton taking multiple helmet-to-helmet hits – it’s all about his posture. “My job is not to lobby for my health”, Newton said Wednesday when asked by reporters about the controversy surrounding his Week 1 loss to the Broncos. “I don’t think it is fair to the game, I don’t think it is fair to the refs”. “So we’re going to continue to play football”. The NFL says it will spend an additional $100 million to develop new technology and support more medical research into the growing problem of head injuries. “If they are going to sit in there, in the offseason especially, and have these rally cries about player safety, player safety, but they’re not going to do anything about it on the field, then it is just lip service”, Kalil said.
Newton had no reaction to the fines, saying there’s “no need to look back”. “We’re dwelling on something that I don’t want to dwell on”, Newton said Wednesday at Bank of America Stadium after a few questions on the topic.
Said left tackle Michael Oher: “Well I wish some calls could have gotten made in the game”.
The NFL’s prevention and treatment of concussions has been a focal point for fans, owners and players alike in recent years, but Cam Newton isn’t having it. “But maybe in the future he will be treated more like a quarterback”.
“We reviewed all of the hits in the game, just like we do for every other game”, Blandino said on Tuesday’s edition of NFL Total Access, “and there was one call that we felt was missed”. Much alarm was raised following the game after the lack of flags resulting from the hits. Stewart’s hit was the only hit to receive a flag for illegal contact.
The Broncos have defended their play, with head coach Gary Kubiak telling The Denver Post, “I mean, [Newton’s] a top player in football – they are designed runs for him”. Simple and plain. This is a contact sport.
