Martin Freeman on his “ambiguous” Captain America: Civil War character
We know quite a bit about who’s who in Captain America: Civil War, which might as well be titled Avengers 2.5 for all the MCU players it features. The media outlet asked the “Fargo” star, right off the bat, about his part in the film. “He works in conjunction with the superheroes and certain agencies that help to…tame…the superheroes power”, Freeman told Italian outlet BadTaste in an interview. The actor mentioned that people will not be able to identify which side the character is fighting for. I like that area that isnt black or white; I like the grays.
He mentioned that his character works for the American government. The third instalment to the “Captain America” movie franchise stars Chris Evan, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Martin Freeman and more.
In fact, Marvel is reportedly looking at doing a lot of crossovers and adaptations, with the most popular being the 2016 event movie “Captain America: Civil War” based on the 2006 comics of the same name.
Ever since Freeman was announced for the film, there has been a large amount of speculation regarding which character the actor will play. He was created by Marvel comics boss Jim Shooter… who reportedly based the character on himself. Captain America leads the resistance, and it looks like Martin Freeman’s character might be playing both sides.
As indicated by HitFix, though Freeman’s role in the film is entirely new, which was specifically written for “Civil War“. As the NSA liaison, Gyrich revoked the Avengers clearances in response to security violations, refusing to give them back until the team could prove themselves not to be a threat. Civil War (and Freeman) could be the flawless set-up.
Does that mean that Martin Freeman would be an antagonist in “Captain America: Civil War“? While a few fans have asserted that Freeman is playing Gyrich, others have suggested he is actually playing Everett Ross, an American Regent of Wakanda, which would also potentially tie him to Black Panther.
