Martin Luther King had complicated legacy on gun violence
A special service Sunday afternoon at the Grace United Methodist Church honored the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr.
“The city of Boston has been touched by Dr. King’s legacy in many ways, and 50 years later we still feel the effects of his legacy”, Walsh said.
And in Minneapolis, activists with the group Black Lives Matter planned to march onto a Mississippi River bridge that connects Minneapolis and St. Paul during a Martin Luther King Day rally.

In Atlanta, the King Center is set to celebrate the holiday with a remembrance ceremony at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Dr. King was taken from this world far too soon, but he instilled in his followers an understanding that they would keep up the momentum he helped build in the struggle for peace and equality. The MLK Jr. Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision.
“It was a dream deeply rooted (in) that we should all be equal in this country”, he said. “He’s been relegated to the history books, and they don’t have a sense of how his views can (still) help us do better”. However, I believe that by serving others, inspiring hope and driving action we can achieve just that.
King’s birthday celebration this year comes as a predominately African-American town in MI learns that it was not told for 1½ years that its residents had been drinking lead-contaminated water, putting the population, especially young children, on the path to irreversible illnesses.
