Martin Luther King Jr. Day March and Rally in Duluth
Over 100 people joined in the march to honor Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday.
Dillard University’s Concert Choir sang a rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before a crowd at City Hall in honor of the civil rights leader.
In South Carolina, the state NAACP said there is still more work to do to honor King.
Dr. King visited Chicago many times, including leading a walk in 1965 to protest segregation in schools here.
“We want to tell the kids how privileged they are to live in a day and age where schools aren’t segregated”, Chris Lowry, attendee, said.
At the end of the march, the people filled Pittman-Sullivan Park and the streets surrounding it as they listened to a program about King’s life and ongoing civil rights efforts.
U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro spoke about Martin Luther King Jr.’s work towards fair and open housing. “Even though he isn’t here we’re trying to keep the dream that he has alive”. In Michigan, people delivered bottled water to residents of Flint amid the city’s drinking water crisis.
State Senator Gerald Boudreaux said Lafayette is fortunate that Martin Luther King Jr.
“It’s important to learn about racial equality and this is a good day to do it and other schools don’t get that opportunity”, said Spencer Hepworth, 11th grade.
“I definitely feel that the parade has grown over the years”.
We asked him why today is so important. “The lord put it upon his heart to seek out and acquire justice for we as black Americans, and not just black Americans but for all people”, Pastor Boyd said. A St. Paul officer was placed on leave while the Police Department investigates allegations that he made a post on Facebook urging drivers to run over protesters.
Protesters from the group Black Lives Matter were able to briefly shut down westbound traffic on the Bay Bridge Monday afternoon, prompting the California Highway Patrol to make several arrests, the Associated Press reported.
