Martin Shkreli has been terminated as CEO of KaloBios
But in a statement issued on Monday, the company said Mr Shkreli had been “terminated” as CEO and “resigned from his position as a member of the board of directors” at the end of last week.
On Thursday, federal prosecutors said that between 2009 and 2014, Shkreli lost some of his hedge fund investors’ money through bad trades, then looted Retrophin, a pharmaceutical company where he was CEO, for $11 million to pay back his disgruntled clients.
In the month leading up to Shkreli’s arrest last week, KaloBios said it would buy the rights to a treatment for Chagas disease that was not approved in the US, ask the Food and Drug Administration for approval, and if successful, sell it at prices similar to hepatitis C drugs.
“‘Trying to find anything we could to stop him’ was the attitude of the government”, Shkreli said during the interview, in which he was accompanied by his lawyers.
Embattled pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli, who is facing securities fraud charges, had his Twitter account hacked Sunday.
A man who bought a lifesaving drug and increased its price by 5,000% has apparently had his Twitter account hacked. Shkreli has been criticized earlier for his stance of raising the price of a key drug but this case is not related to it.
He was charged with securities fraud and conspiracy for setting up a Ponzi-like scheme at his former hedge fund MSMB Capital Management and Retrophin Inc. He resigned as its CEO on Friday.
Shkreli also said that he believes he was arrested, “because of a social experiment and teasing people over the Internet”, referring to his online antics including live streaming his day-to-day activities and answering questions from social media followers. Shkreli held more than 50 per cent of the company’s shares as of November 24, according to Bloomberg data.
KaloBios is the second company that Shkreli, 32, has left since his arrest.
Trading in KaloBios shares has been halted since Thursday. “Willing to donate hundreds of thousands to charities before I go to prison”, and asking people to re-tweet a message for a chance to win the one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album that he notoriously paid $2 million for.
Shkreli tweeted Monday morning that he had regained control of his Twitter profile.
