Martin Shkreli tweets: ‘I will prevail’
Combative, often crass and willfully sophomoric, Shkreli has – so far – appeared to revel in being described as a “pharma bro”, the “drug industry’s villain” and far more unprintable terms since Turing Pharmaceuticals jacked up the price of Daraprim.
Martin Shkreli stepped down as CEO of Turing, a day after he was charged with securities fraud, securities fraud conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy.
Retrophin ousted Shkreli past year.
Martin Shkreli seems once again determined to price a lifesaving drug out of reach of the people who need it. This time he’s trying to increase the price over 100,000%.
Shkreli was arrested Thursday in NY on charges related to hedge funds he ran and his old drug company Retrophin Inc. He faces criminal allegations that he bilked a company out of millions of dollars. Most patients’ copayments will be capped at $10 or less a month.
Martin Shkreli, a lightning rod for growing outrage over soaring prescription drug prices, was arrested by the FBI after a federal investigation.
By Friday, he was out on $5 million bail and back on YouTube, ready anew for his self-created close-up. After he was released, he tweeted: “Glad to be home. Thanks for the support”.
Doctors and medical groups said the price hike was cutting patients off from lifesaving treatment, activists protested outside Turing’s offices, and the episode helped prompt a Senate hearing on drug prices.
Shkreli was arrested Thursday in a probe of his actions involving his hedge fund MSMB Capital Management and as CEO of biopharmaceutical company Retrophin.
Rising pharmaceutical prices has become a topic in the upcoming USA presidential race. There’s no word yet on whether he’ll remain at the helm there. Research Development on new medications continues to be a priority for the company. Shkreli was named CEO and board chairman the same day, and KaloBios shares zoomed from $2.07 to $39.50 within days.
Nasdaq has placed KaloBios’ stock on a trading halt until the company provides more information. Their price fell to $23.59.
