Maryland Cheerleader Hit on WVU TD
It turns out they probably weren’t giving the Mountaineers enough credit. The 52nd installment of the border-state rivalry was played in front of a sellout crowd of 61,174 at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, W. Va. The Hoyas took seven corner kicks in the contest, while the Mountaineers were awarded just one.
The Terps were forced to punt the ball on five of their first half drives, and turned it over on four others. “We looked at the film, graded the film, sat down and talked about it as a staff and went through the film with the players to make those corrections”.
Garman, the Oklahoma State transfer, finished 4-of-9 for 81 yards, 46 of which came on a touchdown pass to true freshman Jahrvis Davenport in the fourth quarter.
Rowe was abysmal in Morgantown. In the middle of all of this, the Terps thought they had a big run that would get them on the board from Brandon Ross; however just before breaking the plane of the end zone he lost control of the ball when stretching resulting in a touchback for West Virginia.
Injury to insult for Maryland on a day where nothing is going right. Last season, GU defeated Maryland, 1-0, in College Park as Allen scored the game victor in the 78th minute to notch the program’s first-ever win over the Terrapins.
Considering the Mountaineers’ defense seems to be greatly improved – they lead the Bowl Subdivision in points allowed (7.7 per game) and turnover margin (plus-3 per game) – it would seem to behoove Oklahoma to avoid an offensive shootout this time around. As sloppy at the Terrapins were, West Virginia did little damage after halftime.
The entire first half was the West Virginia show with the Mountaineers controlling the pace, feel, the line of scrimmage and most important of all, the scoreboard. Baker Mayfield had a big game throwing the ball in the win, completing 32 of 38 passes for 487 yards and four TDs.
The Mountaineers’ offense is as destructive as their defense is impenetrable.
Scouting the run defense: The Mountaineers like to spread opponents out and use a more balanced attack than in years past. Aided by a personal foul penalty for a hit on West Virginia’s running quarterback Skylar Howard, Maryland was quickly down by a touchdown. Most of the offensive day will depend on this. Gibson’s momentum on the long reception carried him out of the back of the endzone and straight into the kitchen of a poor Maryland cheerleader, who just couldn’t get out of the way in time. The Longhorns felt sick to their stomachs and demoralized when the clinic closed at 8 p.m., and Texas (3-3-3) fell to West Virginia 2-0. It can be playing on a short field.
