Mass shooting at video game tournament in Jacksonville leaves multiple dead
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the suspected shooter shot himself and is among the dead. The Baltimore, Maryland, resident is believed to have arrived in Jacksonville on Saturday and spent the night in an area hotel.
People were in the Jacksonville Landing area prior to the shooting, and police said they understood many were hiding in locked areas after the shooting was reported.
“I can’t tell you if we’re going to stay alive or not, because if he opens this stall, he’s going to shoot us”, Aleman told his companion.
Few details were immediately available.
People were shot at the livestream tournament of the new game “Madden NFL 19”, hosted at the Good Luck Have Fun Game Bar at Jacksonville Landing, an outdoor mall. Madden 19 is the latest NFL football video game put out by sports game publisher EA Sports.
Emergency crews and law enforcement flooded into The Jacksonville Landing, a waterfront dining, entertainment and shopping precinct in the city after the incident on Sunday local time. Munoz said an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent showed him a picture of Katz.
Eleven others were injured, including gamer Drini Gjoka, who was grazed in the hand by a bullet.
Braheem Johnson of Jacksonville was working at the Chicago Pizza restaurant next door to the Game Bar when the shots rang out.
Aleman said he knew the two victims well fromplaying together with them, but he was not familiar with the shooter. “You’ll leave knowing when you had a chance to save children’s lives, you took the easy way out & stayed silent”, added another. Three victims were shot once, the other victims were hit multiple times.
“We’re obviously shocked and saddened by this afternoon’s events”.
In 2016 a gunman killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, in the second-deadliest shooting by a single gunman in US history.
“I’ve been telling them this for a while that you need to make the players feel safe”, Jones said. To all those and anyone watching I say this: “Pray for Jacksonville as we deal with this senseless tragedy”. “I’m leaving and never coming back”.
Some gamers say the pressure of competition, the desire to please fans and the intense gaming can lead to anxiety and mental health issues, or worse. A second person with gunshot wounds followed shortly behind them.
“This is a awful situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved”, EA Sports, the makers of the Madden NFL game, said in a statement.
