Massacre victim texted her mother to seek help

Conley, 48, is charged with three counts of capital murder in the deaths and is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.

Sergeant Craig Clopton said most of the victims had been handcuffed and some had been shot multiple times. Officials originally said he was suspected of killing five children and three adults.

Homicide investigators said Conley had a prior relationship with victim Valerie Jackson, and one of the children was their son. “The onset of people expressing sympathy has been wonderful and our family appreciates it immensely”, said the appeal on Go Fund Me, which set a target of $50,000. They retreated and a standoff followed that lasted until around 12:30am, when a negotiator was able to talk Conley out of the house.

Valerie Jackson held captive by her ex-lover sent a text to her mother that she, her husband and her family were being threatened by a gun and pleaded for help. Doctors at the scene said all eight victims suffered gunshot wounds to the head and died at the scene.

Nathaniel Jackson was apparently the son of Conley and Valerie Jackson.

Deputies were called to the home about 9 p.m. Saturday to perform a welfare check requested by a relative, police said. While the call was being placed, deputies surrounded the home, and they spotted the body of a juvenile through a window.

Authorities said Conley was previously in a contentious relationship with the slain mother.

Conley, who has a violent criminal history, had been involved in a dispute with Mrs Jackson before the killings, police said.

They are Valerie Jackson, 40, and Dwayne Jackson, 50.

She testified during a hearing on the restraining order in La Crosse County that he cut her throat with a knife and wrapped an extension cord around their infant daughter’s neck, according to court records. He was sentenced to five years in prison. According to her Facebook page in 2013, Jackson called Conley “the best father of the year”, before ending their relationship and expressing that she was afraid of him. Although prosecutors will probably spend months reaching a final decision on whether to pursue a death sentence, the district attorney bluntly told reporters outside the courtroom that “it seems like a no-brainer”. That relationship ended and Conley and Valerie Jackson began another relationship, before breaking up again, Clopton said.

Conley, who doesn’t have an attorney, was escorted to State District Judge Vanessa Velasquez” bench by a Sheriff’s deputy, and quietly answered “yes’ when asked to confirm his identity.

A man inside opened fire when the deputies tried to force their way in. Authorities declined to comment on assault charges Conley had faced in the past.
