Massive natural disaster Measuring 7.5 on Richter Scale Jolts North India
Metro services have been halted in the national capital.
According to report, the epicenter was at Hindu Kush region which is about 260 kms north of Peshawar and in a magnitude of 7.5. This later went on to have a domino effect on services with many commuters complaining of delays.
The tremors jolted the whole of northern India including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
“Metro services were put on hold from 2.40 PM to 2.55 PM in view of the quake. No damage has been reported so far”, said a senior official. Officials admitted that it took a few time for operations to be restored as a comprehensive safety check was undertaken.
As part of the arrangement a bus will ferry the officials from their residence at Metro Enclave at Pushp Vihar to Barakhamba Road’s Metro Bhawan and back every Monday.
Metro services resumed after a break of 15 minutes.
Metro officials explained saying: “Metro trains are stopped during quake as per statutory guidelines for safety”. I didn’t feel the tremors so the announcement came as a surprise. “Everyone in the coach was very anxious”, said Rita Bhowmick, who had boarded the train from Mayur Vihar. “I pray for everyone’s safety”, the PM said on Twitter.
The overcrowding was specially bad at Mandi House because the corridor usually has four-coach metros, with only a few six-coach trains.
