Massive sinkhole opens up near highway along Oregon coast
The sinkhole is at milepost 358 of Highway 101. A section of Shopping Center Avenue – parallel to Highway 101 – began to slip away, according to Jared Castle, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation.
A large sinkhole closed a highway in OR on Thursday, sending asphalt tumbling into the earth below.
The Oregon Department of Transportation says they will have a detour set up by 9 p.m. tonight.
Castle noted that sinkholes and landslides are common in the region due to the area’s geology. It joined up with a sinkhole across the street which formed in December from heavy rains.
The state closed down part of 101 in Harbor, Oregon, on Thursday night due to the sinkhole, which is the second sinkhole in as many months in the area.
“[It] looks pretty rough for the restaurant”. “We’re singing songs over here”, Tharon Fox told The Curry Coastal Pilot.
Officials say the sinkhole didn’t swallow any vehicles, and there were no injuries.
ODOT officials said the detour is expect to last at least through next week.
