Matt Boyd Gets First Major League Baseball Win
The Royals have lost four straight games when scoring three or less runs.
Turns out, it’s working well in the present.
The Kansas City Royals need a win after losing five of their last seven games.
Boyd received a standing ovation from the crowd of 34,628 after the seventh inning, and couldn’t stop a grin from spreading across his face.
As a fly-ball pitcher, Boyd is already enjoying pitching at cavernous Comerica Park instead of the smaller Rogers Centre. “I love being paired up with him”. Its awesome. Its a baseball stadium. Norris and Boyd have combined to give Detroit 15 1/3 frames of two-run ball, allowing 11 hits while recording seven strikeouts.
Al Avila, longtime assistant to Dave Dombrowski, has been promoted to General Manager of the Detroit Tigers. Early in July FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi reported that there had been “no recent progress toward an extension for Dombrowski”, which is pretty late in the year for not having framework for a new deal established. I’ve known Dave for a long time as well, and his family. But Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he didn’t know about the switch until Tuesday.
“This does not mean we have given up on this season”, Avila said. In 14 years with the Tigers, Dombrowski took one of the worst clubs in the game and took it to six postseason appearances, including World Series losses in 2006 and 2012.
Boyd allowed one run on seven hits with no walks over a career-high seven innings and had two strikeouts.
The only homer he’s given up in two starts against the Royals this season was a leadoff blast by Escobar in a 6-2 home defeat May 9.
“I was really kind of feeling for my breaking balls (curveball and slider), both of them, throughout the whole game”, he said.
“When I agreed to take the job on Saturday, Mr. Ilitch assured me that he is still committed to building a team that can win championships”, Avila said.
“We had a plan of playing Gose shallow, and it just backfired on us”, Cain said. It was Morales’ first triple of the season. It was his first triple since 2012 and the fifth of his career.
Morales’ rare triple evened the score in the fourth.
Ian Kinsler: Tripled to start the fourth and scored on Victor Martinez’s RBI groundout for the go-ahead run.
Rios singled and moved to third on a bad pickoff throw in the fifth, but Boyd got out of the jam.
“I thought he was great”, Royals manager Ned Yost said. Cabrera had been hoping to return in mid-August, but now is only saying he expects to be back sometime this season.
Despite the streak Sanchez will a slight +112 home dog Thursday afternoon, when the Tigers close out their series against Yordano Ventura and the Kansas City Royals.
Sanchez, though, has only allowed five homers in his last six home starts, going 5-0 with a 2.89 ERA.
