Matt Lauer quizzes Gwen Stefani over ‘Used to Love You’ song inspiration
When host Matt Lauer asked Stefani if her new single “Used to Love You” is about her recent divorce from Gavin Rossdale, Stefani quickly recovered from her initial shock and responded like a pro.
“Your personal life has been in the headlines”. “Are fans misinterpreting something here or is it all right there in front of us in terms of the meaning of the song?” Stefani, 46, replied at a roundtable with her fellow Voice coaches, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Pharrell Williams.
“Put me on the spot!”
Gwen Stefani headed to NYC for an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, ‘ where she donned a skin-tight patent leather dress with cutouts. In the footage, she breaks down in tears and alludes to a devastating heartbreak.
“I thought I was the best thing that ever happened to you”, sings Stefani on the emotional cut, which comes just months after her high profile split from her husband of 13 years, Gavin Rossdale. “It was heartbreaking and is still heartbreaking going through this whole process, but the fact that Gavin has been very adult in settling everything between the two and really been a man about it has been very therapeutic for Gwen’s healing”.
“It’s just nice to do music and have that support from everybody”, she reveals. A judge is expected to finalize the divorce by the end of the year (15).
The couple will share in the custody of their three sons with a 50/50 split in physical custody, but because of Gwen’s touring schedule, the children will spend most of their time with Gavin.
In the event that a tiny fraction of your soul remains intact after listening to “Hello” by Adele, it’s guaranteed to be crushed upon listening to Gwen Stefani’s “Used To Love You”.
