Mattis: North Korea can not drive wedge between the United States and South Korea

The Korean women’s hockey team, the first in Olympic history to combine players from North and South, was routed 8-0 by Switzerland on Saturday night in its debut game, outshot 52-8 in a matchup that could have been far worse if not for the goaltending of Shin So Jung.

Security for anything involving the North Koreans has been exceptionally tight.

“We feel safe”, she said, adding she didn’t always feel that way.

Kim met with South Korean president Moon Jae-in at the Olympic opening ceremony, and the pair shook hands.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is not directly addressing news that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in for a visit, as the two Koreas use the Olympics as an opportunity for renewing ties.

Beyond the Games, however, it is not clear how the typically unstable relationship between Pyeongyang and Seoul and its allies will continue.

Despite the loss, South Korea forward Park Jong-ah remained hopeful for the games to come.

Outside the stadium, there were anti-unification protests over North Korea’s involvement in the games.

Moon apparently cited the conditions necessary for an inter-Korean summit.

In response, Moon said it was a matter of South Korea’s sovereignty and its domestic affairs, noting it would not be appropriate for Abe to directly mention the issue.

Her arrival on Kim Jong Un’s private jet with a coterie of 22 officials was broadcast live on South Korean television. But he warned that it could come at a price of deteriorating ties with the USA and Japan, both of which maintain a hardline stance against the North.

“Everybody’s been wonderful, absolutely wonderful”, said Mancari of the South Koreans.

“Although there may be disagreements and concerns at home and overseas, what’s clear is that peace stems from dialogue and it’s impossible to oppose dialogue if we want peace”, she said.

Progress in communication between North and South Korea on Saturday prompted concern in the Japanese government that Seoul may rush into dialogue with the North at the expense of the pressure campaign espoused by Japan and the United States.
