Mauricio Pochettino: Jan Vertonghen injury “looks bad”
West Brom head to White Hart Lane this weekend with the opportunity to earn a third consecutive Premier League victory, but it will undoubtedly be a tough task against Mauricio Pochettino’s equally in-form Tottenham side.
Kane, who became a father for the first time last Sunday, could have had even more goals as Spurs coasted to a surprisingly easy win, their seventh straight in all competitions. “We played wonderful football”, Pochettino said. I am very happy because the way we played was important for us after we beat Chelsea.
“After Chelsea was a big challenge for us to keep momentum, to show we learn and show we are mature enough to fight”, he said. “We will push him to recover, we will try to help him”. We are much better than last season.
Kane put Spurs in front from Christian Eriksen’s cute pass in the 12th minute at White Hart Lane before a shot from Eriksen deflected in off Gareth McAuley for an own goal.
There was further misery for West Brom – and underserved woe for Foster – eight minutes from time as Kane beautifully annotated the win by slipping a pass to Alli 25 yards from goal and continuing his run to dispatch his worldwide colleague’s scooped pass. “Today was a very good example”.
The Baggies have won only one of their last four away games and have recently lost to Chelsea and Arsenal via a solitary goal in the final few minutes of the fixture.
Pochettino’s side played in a flowing 3-4-2-1 formation which West Brom could not deal with, but did suffer a setback when defender Jan Vertonghen was forced off with what looked like a serious injury and replaced by Ben Davies.
Their partnership is now one of the most thrilling in the league – and one Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp says Mauricio Pochettino must continue to encourage. “We feel very disappointed”, Pochettino said at a post-match news conference, before confirming Tottenham must wait for Vertonghen’s swelling to subside in order to fully survey the damage. “His ankle is badly [swollen]”. “We’re in the same league as Spurs, but we’re not, if you see what I mean”.
“But Tottenham are in a great position, they have got players signed up on long contracts”.
Ex-Tottenham players Ossie Ardiles, Micky Hazard and Graham Roberts all took to Twitter to celebrate an outstanding win for Spurs, hailing Pochettino and his players.
