Max Scherzer Threw A Magical No-Hitter Against The Mets
NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom is lined up to pitch the opener, possible in late-afternoon shadows.
Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer no-hit the Mets on Saturday night, as Washington won 2-0.
While the Dodgers don’t have a deep staff, they possess a dynamic top of the rotation in Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw.
“We’re all pretty privileged to witness it”, Williams said. “From a season standpoint, we were able to accomplish a few good things together, but it wasn’t good enough”.
Scherzer is just the sixth pitcher in Major League Baseball history to achieve the milestone in the same year and he did it against a Mets team that had already locked up the National League East Division title. “We’re going to party on here, we’re playing Friday and I don’t care where it’s at”. “So we’ve got to hang in there”. “So one of those nights”, he said.
With not much reason to follow the Nats at this point and college football dominating the sports headlines aside from the Major League Baseball teams still fighting for playoff spots and positioning, was this one of the least noticed no-hitters as it was happening? “He didn’t miss. He didn’t make mistakes and had all three of his pitches going”. He fanned 166 and walked 31 in 150 innings. A doubleheader has been scheduled for Sunday, the final day of the regular season.
Early in the season, while the Mets were stumbling, there was talk they would be a risky team in the playoffs if they made it because of starting pitching.
Scherzer walked none and struck out nine in a row between the sixth and ninth innings. “I was able to execute all four of my pitches whether I was behind in the count or ahead in the count“.
Scherzer also threw a no-hitter against the Pirates in June, missing a ideal game by hitting a batter in the ninth inning.
Only one Mets batter, Kevin Plawecki, got to first base, on a throwing error by Escobar in the sixth inning.
The 17 strikeouts tied Ryan for the most in a no-hitter, STATS said. San Francisco Giants pitcher Chris Heston did it on June 9.
For good measure, Scherzer also outhit the Mets, lining a single off ace Matt Harvey. Granderson’s soft pop finished it.
The first run for the Nationals came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ramos, scoring Michael Taylor. The Nationals needed this type of performance, too, managing to only get two runs on the Mets. It was Harper’s 42nd homer.
Rafael Martin (2-0) got one out as the Nationals ended a six-game skid against the Mets. Except in Scherzer’s case, I suppose it’s plural, since he’s now thrown two no-hitters.
Williams reportedly angered veterans by failing to communicate with players, and he is likely on his way out as manager.
Mets: LHP Steven Matz got an injection for his sore back and “hopefully that helps him a lot”, Collins said. The 24-year-old rookie is 4-0.
“To throw a no-hitter, sometimes it takes a little luck“, Scherzer said.
