Mayfield, Westbrook named Heisman Finalists

Michigan’s star player Jabrill Peppers is up for college football’s most prestigious award – The Heisman Trophy. After collecting his trophy Thursday night, Watson said he was confident of beating out Jackson and the other finalist, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield. He also broke the conference record for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns (21) by a quarterback in addition to rewriting the school’s single-season rushing record with 1,538 yards. Browning has thrown for 3,280 yards and 42 touchdowns, while running for an additional four scores.

Westbrook leads a pass-happy Big 12 in receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and receiving yards per game.

Watson joined BYU’s Ty Detmer, Florida’s Danny Wuerffel and Oklahoma’s Jason White as the only two-time winners of the O’Brien Award.

The race for the Heisman is finally coming into focus – and just in time. Watson helped the Tigers to a 28-10 halftime lead, then dug down in the fourth quarter after Jackson had rallied the Cardinals to a 36-28 edge.

“I know there’s a lot of great players out there, but to be able to coach a guy like Jabrill Peppers is a real joy”.

Aside from the 2016 Army vs. Navy game, the 2016 College Football Season is in the books which means it’s time to start evaluating who deserves the 2016 Heisman Trophy. End Jonathan Allen claimed the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player, while offensive tackle Cam Robinson earned the Outland Trophy as the best interior lineman.

Westbrook and Mayfield were both named finalists for the 2016 Heisman Trophy this evening.

The first receiver nominated since Amari Cooper’s invite in 2013, Westbrook is the second player from Oklahoma to make the bill. He passed for 3,914 yards and 37 touchdowns while also rushing for 529 yards and six touchdowns.

On Monday, the list of Heisman finalist was revealed to the college football community.

PRO PROSPECTS: Watson will be one of the first quarterbacks taken in next spring’s National Football League draft, but he might have to rebuild his stock some to show he is a top-of-the-first-round player.

Peppers was awarded the Defensive Player of the Year, Linebacker of the Year and Return Specialist of the Year awards in the Big Ten this season.
