Mayor Emanuel Responds to Calls for His Resignation
If Emanuel approved that payout without seeing the video that contradicted the official “justified shooting” posture of his Police Department then he was irresponsible with the purse strings of cash-strapped Chicago.
“That gives you a whole play-by-play, like who is coming around the corner in a chase or which officer is going where”, he said.
“This Thanksgiving, I ask everybody to keep those who’ve suffered tragic loss in our thoughts and prayers, and to be thankful for the overwhelming majority of men and women in uniform who protect our communities with honor”, the president wrote.
Demonstrators chanted “Stop the cover-up!” and “16 shots!”
Calls for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s own resignation, along with Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, have been increasing over the past two weeks. In an editorial on Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times had called for McCarthy’s resignation. “That situation seems to me to be a consistent issue in Chicago”, Mr. Bratton told reporters today at One Police Plaza. In an appearance Tuesday on WTTW-TV’s Chicago Tonight, Alvarez said she won’t resign.
The dash-cam video of the shooting initially released by the city has no sound, nor do videos released later from several other police cruisers at the scene.
Deputy Superintendent John Escalante will step in to fill McCarthy’s place for the time being, Emanuel said. “I think that is a pretty good endorsement of his service and his tenure here at the White House”.
“What I first welcome is the conclusion of the existing investigation”. Futterman says he impressed by the individuals appointed to the task force. I have taken certain steps prior to this date.
Garcia went on to say that the city’s quick settlement with Laquan McDonald’s family is another indication that Emanuel was trying to hide something.
Meanwhile, Clinton has made criminal justice reform and police accountability a central pillar of her campaign, and some Black Lives Matters activists expressed frustration earlier Wednesday that Clinton hadn’t taken a harder line sooner. “Given all the work that’s been done, we wouldn’t want to start over”.
“If something happened, we need to deal with it. But, to set up another investigation while one has yet to conclude, in my view, is wrong….”
MITCHELL: Well, police relations in Chicago has always been tense. If the lights are not used during an incident, officers should turn on the system manually, according to a directive on the police department’s website. “I’m confident that this task force is going to dig down deep and come up with a list of recommendations that is going to advance that really important, critical goal of trust and accountability”, Lightfoot said. His office has refused to get back to me, so I have not been able to have a conversation with him personally about this.
Host Andrea Mitchell explained Emanuel is also “very close to Hillary Clinton”.
