Mayor Faulconer urges Congress to pass legislation to protect Dreamers
Mayor Kevin Faulconer of San Diego posted a video and message of support for dreamers on his Twitter page Wednesday morning. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services says there are about 690,000 active DACA recipients in the country. On Saturday, President Trump pulled the USA out of the United Nation’s compact seeking global cooperation to protect the safety and rights of refugees and migrants. Cornyn has called for a long-term solution for the almost 800,000 DACA recipients, some of whom have started to lose their protections, but has said the fix will have to wait until after Republicans address tax and spending bills.
This is a national tragedy. Ahead of the meeting, Trump again said on Wednesday that Democrats want “to have illegal immigrants pouring into our country”, an inauspicious framing of the Dreamer proposals for those who want them in the deal. Another provision would strengthen electronic verification systems for employers and limit green cards for family members of US citizens and permanent residents. She, too, was brought to the U.S.as a child from Mexico, and like Angeles was unsure how she’d ever afford college.
This scenario isn’t hypothetical.
Meanwhile, DACA supporters held a demonstration outside Republican Rep. Jeff Denham’s office in Modesto, where they urged him to support the Dreamer program.
Without a legislative solution for DACA recipients, Arreola will lose his ability to legally work in the USA and face deportation.
Both Democrats and Republicans have called for a solution to give DACA recipients clarity about their future, and Cornyn is working with Democrats to get it done this year. There are DACA recipients who are as American as myself. Six percent have started their own businesses.
Garcia Hernandez, a Law Professor at the University of Denver, said there’s a push to pass the DREAM Act before the end of the year. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Trump pushed back against Democrats in Congress supporting protection for Dreamers. And it should be paired with increased border security funding. 321,220 immigrants from ten different countries in Central America and Africa are in the U.S. under the TPS program, according to the Journal on Migration and Human Security. Likewise, 20 percent of Republican voters said the same.
“There it is. Paul Ryan just admitted that after providing $1 trillion in tax breaks to the top 1% and large corporations, Republicans will try to cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and help for the most vulnerable Americans”, Sanders wrote.
In a month, overall support for a DACA amnesty has fallen as well. But it may not be enough to get the DREAM Act passed.
That’s why, according to advocates, a Dreamer fix is needed urgently.
Groups like the Center for Immigration Studies, Federation for American Immigration Reform, NumbersUSA, Immigration Reform Law Institute and Californians for Population Stabilization want people to think they support finding a compassionate and sensible solution for Dreamers, but how can they when for years they have attacked us and other immigrants through backdoor legal assaults and draconian legislative demands. Some 30,000 individuals will be removed from the workforce each month over the next two years. Many obstacles will come my way, but no I will not quit.
