Mayor urges ‘extreme precautions’ as cold weather hits NYC
The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the entire day Saturday, and it remains in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday. If Boston reaches 3 below they will tie the record low for the date, a 4 below reading breaks it and becomes the first new record low in February in 49 years. If you get under one of these bands, a coating is possible, but it will be wind-whipped. The image below from NOAA shows the areas most likely to see some snow. Be aware of changing road conditions! Saturday morning wind chills will be as low as five below zero, and Sunday morning could be as cold as zero degrees before wind chill.
Sunday night: A 50 percent chance of snow, low around 15.
Precipitation is likely to increase Monday night and may continue on and off through Tuesday, Pydnowski said.
For the fourth consecutive day, Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the far north. Thursday’s warning covers a much larger region than the previous days, impacting almost the entire northern half. We’ll keep you posted.
Wind chills that cold can bring on frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.
Temperatures are plummeting into the low teens to single digits, with a wind chill factor of 25 degrees below zero, possible as low as 34 degrees below zero tonight into tomorrow. Blustery and bitter cold. Northwest wind 11 to 17 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 29 miles per hour.
Sunday’s high will only reach about 21 degrees.
A major cold blast is hitting the Northeast and Midwest today and forcing almost 100 million people to deal with risky and possibly life-threatening wind chills.
Monday: Turning cloudy. Light snow developing. Most of it will fall around midday with some minor accumulations of around an inch. Highs will be around 15.
