Mazda sports auto concept to debut at 2015 Tokyo motor show
“Designers strove to condense the company’s sports auto history to as great a degree as possible into this concept” Mazda said in a statement.
Mazda also revealed details of other cars it will be showcasing at the Tokyo Motor Show.
Should Mazda bring back rotary engine tech to its production cars?
The teaser at the top of the page is so dark you can only really see the greenhouse area, long hood, and short trunk.
“Mazda doesn’t have much to say about the concept except that it’s a modern sports auto but “…retains a sense of lineage and authenticity”, and wraps Mazda’s sports vehicle history up in a single concept.
In addition to a new RX-8, Mazda may be working on the rumored RX-7 successor (which could go by the RX-9 moniker) to sit as a halo model atop the brand’s sports vehicle range. That car’s 1.3-litre twin-chamber rotary engine produced a healthy 228bhp at 8200rpm, but admittedly, its thirst for fuel and increasingly stringent emissions regulations ensured its demise.
In line with the company’s theme for the Tokyo Motor Show this year, “Accelerate toward our dreams”, Mazda will make an appeal for the brand’s unique approach to driving pleasure.
The simplicity of the rotary means big power can be extracted from minimal displacement, though Mazda put a newer version on the backburner to develop its SkyActiv engines. Fingers crossed until the final finished product is launched by Mazda.
