McCain Says Trump Owes Veterans An Apology
Warren said while it’s easy to defend McCain as a war hero, the Republican candidates were much more reluctant to go after Trump when he described Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers.
He adds that there are “so many men and women who served and sacrificed – and happened to be held prisoner”.
Trump cited an article written by Sharyl Attkisson in which the author reported Trump saying four times that he thought McCain was a war hero.
Speaking by phone Monday on NBC’s Today, Trump reiterated to host Matt Lauer that he’s “not a fan of John McCain”, asserting that “he’s done a awful job for the vets”.
And in his latest tweets and statements from his campaign, Trump touts his record on veterans and demands that McCain apologize for calling those who attended a Trump rally in Phoenix last week “crazies”.
“As a veteran and the son of a veteran, I find Mr. Trump’s brand of vitriol particularly offensive, and I have no confidence that he could adeptly lead our nation’s armed forces,” said Perry.
At another point in his interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, he said, “I’m in the (political) arena”, suggesting he’s fair game for criticism as a US senator.
Declining by and large to mix it up with Trump, McCain said that “I’m not a hero”, but he did serve with many heroes in Vietnam and they should not be denigrated.
The 78-year-old decorated aviator was shot down, captured, tortured and spent five years in prison camp during the Vietnam war. But those who were my senior ranking officers, people like Colonel Bud Day, Congressional Medal of Honor victor, those who have inspired us to do things that we otherwise would not have been capable of doing.
It’s true that Trump stated one time that McCain is not a war hero. “For me to look back in anger at anyone is non-productive and our country was divided at nearly unprecedented fashion during the Vietnam War. So I have worked ever since to try and heal those wounds”. It is a disgrace what’s happening in this country and John McCain has done nothing about it but talk. The former Texas governor repeated his call on Saturday for Trump to step down as a candidate.
With a smile, the senator’s son said Trump was wrong about that.
