McCain says Trump should apologise to US military families
While he earned 28 percent support during the first three nights of interviewing, that dipped to single digits on the final day.
Sen. John McCain, the target of Donald Trump’s ire all weekend, took the high road Monday. “But where were they when Donald Trump shot off his mouth about Mexican-Americans?” she said.
“Rankings in a single-choice poll can be swayed by a tiny shift in public opinion”, The New Republic reported.
The television personality and Republican presidential candidate does not owe him an apology personally, the Arizona senator and retired Navy captain noted, as reported by United States Today, but Trump should not have denigrated the memory of others who fell into enemy hands in Vietnam and other conflicts.
But Trump said McCain isn’t doing enough for veterans, who are treated like “third class citizens”.
Many rallied to McCain’s defense, but on Monday the defeated former presidential candidate downplayed the attack on his own record, while defending those he served with. “I like people who weren’t captured“.
“You misrepresent just like everybody else”, Trump responded.
While McCain was experiencing debilitating torture as a prisoner of war, Trump caroused as a Manhattan playboy.
“He’s not a war hero”, Trump retorted. Now, he’s watching again as his father’s reputation as a war hero becomes an unlikely subject of debate in the 2016 campaign. “I like individuals who weren’t captured”.
Trump is known for his off-the-cuff and provocative statements, but his outburst targeting McCain sparked a firestorm of bipartisan condemnation. When McCain returned, broken from the war, Trump was being hit with Fair Housing Act discrimination suit. He’s also sought to use the furor over his remarks to remind supporters, especially those frustrated with Washington, that he’s not a typical politician.
At another point in his interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, he said, “I’m in the (political) arena”, suggesting he’s fair game for criticism as a USA senator.
McCain wouldn’t get an apology from Trump even if he did want one.
