McCann, A-Rod and Yankees break loose again, rout Red Sox
The 23-year-old left-hander from Edison High became the eighth Red Sox pitcher to make his major league debut against the Yankees dating to 1914.
“I looked around when I was warming up, ” said Owens, “and (thought) ‘Here I am.’ So I tried to embrace (the surroundings) as best I could and kind of have fun at the same time”.
Owens has a fastball that ranges from 88 to 92 miles per hour and “succeeds more with deception than velocity because batters struggle to pick up the ball out of his hand”, Baseball America’s Vince Lara-Cinisomo wrote last August.
The Yankees are now averaging nine runs a game over their last 10 games, with outbursts of 21 runs, 12 runs, and 13 runs twice to their name.

“They had their way with our bullpen”, manager John Farrell said. Owens gave up five hits, struck out five and walked one. Tanaka won 13 games for the Pinstripes last year in his first Major League season and was very good at home. Owens hid any anxiousness under his ponytail and southern California cool.
“When I pushed off, the inside of my knee stretched a little bit”, McCann said. Henry Owens and the Sox face Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees (59-45) Tuesday in the Bronx.
That brought out pitching coach Carl Willis. Owens has been focusing on his curve ball lately and less on his slider. “I fell behind a couple of guys and they got some hits”.
But with a 1-2 count – and the tying run in scoring position – Girardi took out Wilson and went to Betances. A 2-and-2 changeup was down in the strike zone but Rodriguez stayed on it.
“Rusney is going to get regular at-bats”, Farrell said.
Tanaka was fine, but he surrendered a long home run to Pablo Sandoval to open the seventh, ending his night after six-plus innings and three runs. The Red Sox are an organization in transition, as symbolized by the departure of Larry Lucchino.
The big seventh began when shortstop Xander Bogaerts bounced a throw for an error on Jacoby Ellsbury’s leadoff grounder.
Henry Owens lost his Red Sox debut against the Yankees on Tuesday, allowing three runs in five innings.
Carlos Beltran promptly doubled to right center and was sent home on the next at bat by a Chase Headley double of his own. After Mike Napoli smoked a one-out double into the left field corner, Alejandro De Aza laid down a bunt along the third base line that proved trouble for the Yankees. Alexi Ogando replaced Breslow, but allowed a home run to Chris Young to give the Yankees a 10-run lead. We don’t get consistently seven or eight innings out of our starters, so there’s a lot put on their plate. One of the adjustments he made during the season, he said, was to stop overthinking. The same is true of Justin Masterson.
Coach Todd Bowles says “hopefully” Wilkerson will be available to practice Wednesday, but added that the Jets are going to be cautious with the injury.
Enough to leave you wanting to see more. And boy, was tonight a good night to be a Yankees fan.
