McCarthy: Benghazi panel goal ‘find the truth – period’
While Clinton’s Republican rivals have condemned the Oregon attack, most were also quick to declare their opposition to stricter gun laws to address mass shootings.
With that in mind, Clinton made it apparent through her top aides that, if Congress doesn’t act, she’s willing to take the executive action route that Obama has taken with immigration and other issues. “That’s not enough. How many people have to die before we actually act?”
Her voice broke as she called on to stage a mother named Nicole Hockey, whose child was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in 2012.
During a campaign appearance in New Hampshire, Clinton decried the “extremism” that she said has come to characterize the debate over the nation’s gun laws.
Clinton said she supports the 2013 Senate bill expanding background checks on gun purchases, which most Republicans argue will not prevent determined individuals from getting their hands on gun. Hillary needs to convince her own Democratic Party that her campaign isn’t a disaster: “That’s why she wants to lead off as a victim of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy Mark IV – to shame them into rallying to her defense and abandoning the myriad of better options”. Criminals don’t follow gun laws.
It’s the first major proposal from Clinton during this campaign on gun control.
Tuesday’s comments are just one of several times McCarthy has sought to walk back his original remarks and defend the committee.
Sanders’ prospects in the state improve by a Biden entry, as the vice president seems to draw support away from Clinton.
The Democrat’s proposed measures include universal background checks, renewal of the assault weapons ban, and barring domestic abusers from holding guns. One senior administration official says a few anxious internally that defining a commercial seller through a hard sales threshold – as opposed to, say, leaving it to the discretion of law enforcement to determine who is a commercial seller – could be subject to legal challenge and could end up sweeping in people selling guns who clearly were not engaged in it as a long term business.
Sanders, the populist Vermont senator, has been gaining ground in national polls and still holds a comfortable lead in New Hampshire.
Emily Schillinger, a spokeswoman for Boehner, said in response to the ad: “This is a classic Clinton attempt to distract from her record of putting classified information at risk and jeopardizing our national security, all of which the FBI is investigating”.
“I think that would be about as stupid a thing as you could possibly do”, said Mr Bloomberg, who threw his political weight and philanthropical wallet behind gun control as a co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
