McCarthy comments on Packers riding high after win in Detroit
In case you missed it, the Green Bay Packers defeated the Detroit Lions 27-23 on what was a ridiculous finish to Thursday Night Football. Aaron Rodgers 61-yard throw coming after a penalty with 0:00 on the clock arced high into the air before coming down into the hands of leaping tight end Richard Rodgers in the end zone. The play itself is normally viewed as a fluke, with the name Hail Mary it sounds as though divine intervention is necessary for a walk off win.
The Packers, who dont play again until they host Dallas on December 13, could be back atop the division after they return to work from having the full weekend off. The Vikings (8-3) have a home game against Seattle on Sunday. They’re weren’t prepared to cover the “Rebound Pass” like they normally would. Injuries clearly decimated the offensive line.
The Lions didn’t want to discuss the big picture Thursday night, what the loss truly meant for the rest of their season and, potentially, for the future of the front office and the coaching staff and numerous players. “I couldn’t write a better script than that!” The two receivers on the left side of the formation run straight with a slight angle towards the center of the end zone.
The Lions defense did exactly what was necessary to get the win despite letting the Pack back into the game in the second half. It looked like the two teams would continue heading in opposite directions until the Packers’ offence woke up in the second half with Rodgers tossing two touchdowns and running one in himself before the Hail Mary. The Lions had three sacks, too. Six of them were at the 30 yard line or further at the snap while two of them hung out at the 50 yard line.
The Packers were fortunate to even have the chance to attempt the toss, which they were afforded on an untimed play after Detroit committed a face-mask penalty on a lateral-heavy last ditch effort as time expired on the previous down. It’s just a shame that the offense couldn’t play the whole game with the same fire they had in the first quarter as they just disappeared. Nevermind the fact that the Lions coaches didn’t recognize Aaron Rodgers had enough of an arm to throw the pass to the end zone and enough mobility to escape a paltry three-man rush. A lone bright spot came from John Crockett, who found out three hours before the game started he’d be suiting up.
“No one was around him”. This one was a 50-yard pass to Quincy Morgan (No. 4 on top plays of 2002 video) to give the Browns a 21-20 win. Had they taken care of business, the Packers would be 7-5 and need help to catch Minnesota.
Maybe, but his 6-foot-4 son was born to make a play like that. All the Lions defenders were behind him and therefore unable to challenge him for the ball, a costly move. One Rodgers made the throw, another Rodgers made the catch and the Green Bay players spilled off the sideline right away, realizing they’d won. “It was a little bit of shock at a certain point”.
