McCaskill Backs Iran Deal
The IAEA will be able to review the Iranians’ work after the fact.
The IAEA, which says it takes no information at face value, has repeatedly asked for fresh, direct access to Parchin.
Netanyahu has been one of the deal’s most vocal opponents, and the American Jewish community has been divided on the agreement.
Barack Obama has enough votes to get the Iran deal through the House of Representatives, despite Republican efforts to block the historic nuclear accord, the minority leader, Nancy Pelosi, has said.
All IAEA member countries must give the agency some insight into their nuclear programs. Why should Iran be trusted to carry out its own nuclear inspections at a military site it tried to hide from the world?
As one U.S. senator said, “That’s like the NFL allowing a player to test his own urine sample for drug abuse”. It also deleted an assertion that only seven such samples could be taken from suspected nuclear installations. But nations- like Iran – suspected of possible proliferation are under greater scrutiny that can include stringent inspections. But the document suggests that areas of sensitive military activity remain out of bounds.
The statement follows claims by The Associated Press (AP) on Wednesday that the draft version of a side agreement indicates Iran could use its inspectors to investigate the Parchin military base south of Tehran.
An Associated Press exclusive report on the Iran nuclear program, published to much hoopla on Wednesday afternoon, appears to have been at best unintentionally misleading and at worst knowingly inaccurate, according to analyses of the reporting on Thursday. The critics have complained that the wider deal is unwisely built on trust of the Iranians, while the administration has insisted it depends on reliable inspections.
It could be a matter of priorities. What they’re saying right now in Iran, they have no intention. this sets the standard for the future. He went on to allege that no IAEA inspectors would be allowed in Parchin at all, and that Iran would “inspect itself”.
DeLauro also argued that walking away from the deal would mean “going it alone”, rendering any re-imposed sanctions by the U.S. “ineffective”.
The director general of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, reacted to the AP story with a statement Thursday defending the agreement the agency reached with Iran concerning the Parchin military site.
“They kidnapped little kids from neighboring villages and put bullets in their heads and killed them in front of the villagers and said we’re gonna run our bombs out of here”, said retired Staff Sgt.
But Ned Price, a spokesman for the White House’s National Security Council, said Washington was “confident in the agency’s technical plans” for its investigation into Iran’s activities.
Both Iran and the IAEA were upbeat when announcing the agreement last month.
The IAEA report addressing its concerns over Iran’s vexed nuclear program is expected to be submitted this December.
