McClendon named Georgia interim coach for bowl game
Beyond that, I’m hesitant to say Miami will be a consistent national title contender like they were in their glory days.
At his farewell press conference Monday in Athens, Richt was unsure of his next move – he said he may take time off from coaching – but said he looked forward to coaching in Georgia’s bowl game. He started fast, leading the Bulldogs to three Sugar Bowls and two SEC titles in his first seven years, and he won the SEC, finishing third in the country, in his second season.
Richt, 55, interviewed with the Hurricanes on Tuesday and was immediately considered the frontrunner for the job after parting ways with Georgia last week. Randy Shannon, now Florida’s linebackers coach and a former UM head coach and defensive coordinator; former UM linebackers coach Micheal Barrow, now with the Seattle Seahawks; and former UM All-American and USF defensive line coach Kevin Patrick, now at North Texas.
“I was looking for a good, young, smart, bright, aggressive secondary coach that we could sort of develop”, Saban said earlier this week.
Then Wednesday, reports came out saying Richt was taking the head ball coach job at The University of Miami. The lone recent exception to that trend was Jim Donnan, who was Marshall’s coach when hired to replace Goff following the 1995 season. Richt is a strong recruiter inside and outside of South Florida, having a top-10 ranked class by ESPN each of the last six seasons at Georgia.
Well, was just told with 100-percent certainty that Mark Richt to Miami should be finalized tonight or tomorrow. The Hurricanes are not expected to learn their postseason destination before Sunday, but the Pinstripe Bowl is a top choice of Miami’s players.
Heisman Coach- During his time at Florida State, Richt worked with two quarterbacks that ended up winning the Heisman Trophy; Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke. “You’re talking about a guy who is going to develop players and who could also be a father figure in their lives”. It is unknown if Scott will remain on the staff. Richt said at the news conference. Quarterman posted a message of support on Twitter soon after news of Richt’s decision broke Wednesday evening. He said he wants to work closely with quarterbacks.
“I think it’s the best possible candidate we could have gotten”, Kaaya said of Richt.
For now, the Hurricanes’ fair-weather fan base has a lot to be excited about. He is a former Georgia receiver who has been on Richt’s staff since 2007, one year after his career as a Georgia receiver ended.
