McDowell, Knox tied for lead in PGA event
McDowell began the day tied with Knox on 19 under after Sunday’s final day was cut short by storms but after a brief stoppage for more rain Knox made his move with a birdie at the 13th.
Graeme McDowell held his nerve to claim victory at the OHL Classic in Mexico after beating Jason Bohn and Russell Knox in a play-off.
“Do I have long left?’ Questions like that”, McDowell said.
McDowell closed with a 66 to finish at 18-under 266 which he thought would be only good enough for second place. McDowell had five holes to play, while Bohn and Knox had six holes to complete at the par-71 El Camaleon Golf Club. He missed the green with his second shot from a fairway bunker, then hit a poor pitch, leaving himself a 15-foot par putt that he missed. It was so pure that it looked as if it might go in.
Having pulled his approach, Knox was unable to match that – neither could Bohn – but the consolation from another splendid performance by the Inverness man is that he has now leapt into top spot in the 2016 FedEx Cup standings. The Ulsterman put the advice into use Sunday, and added that he relied on it when hitting the shot that ultimately won him the tournament.
“It’s the game of golf, and it’s very hard”. And I said to myself that I was going to appreciate it when it came – and I’m going to appreciate this one let me tell you, because this year’s been a grind.
“So many decisions I’ve made over the last 25 years have been about golf, ” Leonard said.
It showed at the end. PGA officials just told news that the action will resume later today and continue on Monday.
The 2010 U.S. Open champion maintained that form on the back nine where he birdied the 10th, 12th and 13th holes before being forced off the course with a 19-under total of 200.
Baddeley, a three-time victor, lost his card last season and failed to get it back through the Web.com Tour Finals.
It’s the Ryder Cup star’s first PGA Tour victory since April 2013’s RBC Heritage, and his first win of any kind since last year’s Alstom Open De France in July.
