McDowell, Knox tied in Mexico, head for Monday finish
Graeme McDowell made seven birdies in the space of eight holes as he vaulted up the leaderboard to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.
Play was suspended due to heavy rain for almost 3 1/2 hours Sunday afternoon then resumed for just over an hour before the course became unplayable because of darkness.
Fathauer, seeking his first ever win, had held the overnight lead but the occasion perhaps got the better of him as he dropped shots on the first and 10th holes, with a sole birdie on the ninth.
McDowell was at 12-under 130. Fathauer, trying to make it six straight PGA Tour events with a first-time victor, had a one-shot lead starting the final round but had only one birdie against two bogeys to fall back.
Jason Bohn was at 17 under through 12 holes.
McDowell birdied the par-5 13th before it was too dark to continue.
“As I went down to get them, I figured I could be going home very soon”, McDowell said.
“I know maybe when I get home I’ll have a physical breakdown and sleep for days, but I feel fine”, Knox said.
Recap: It was not a good day to post an over-par score.
American Justin Leonard (67) and Harold Varner (68) rounded out the group on 13-under, with American Johnson Wagner a further shot back on 201.
Park is making her first start since withdrawing in China two weeks ago because of a cyst on her left middle finger. Sei Young Kim (70) was second at 7-under 209, So Yeon Ryu and Carlota Ciganda both shot 69 to tie for third at 6-under 210.
With Bohn the only player within four shots of the co-leaders, this overtime finale appears ready to be decided between a pair of players moving in opposite directions.
