McLaren planning all-new supercar for 2018
McLaren’s 650S Supercar is a numbers darling.
0 to 100 km/h should take less than 3 seconds and the model should hit a top speed of about 330 km/h.
Peak power of 660bhp would match the P14’s closest current rival, the Ferrari 488 GTB, and still allow the 675LT to crown McLaren’s Super Series range. The 650S may have P1-inspired styling, but not all supercar consumers find it as lovely as the competition. The new model, internally known as the P14, will replace the 650S, which itself replaced the 12C in 2014.
Although it’s being billed as an “all-new” model, the report specifies it will carry over the carbon fiber tub and V8 twin-turbo 3.8-liter engine wrapped around in a design which is believed to represent a significant departure from the 650S. Presently, the track-oriented McLaren 675LT develops 666 HP and wears lower-profile bodywork.
The McLaren 650s was launched in 2014 and now the company is planning its successor which will land in 2018.
McLaren design director Frank Stephenson has already said the P14 will be “even crazier” than the P1 hypercar, but the company’s established hallmarks, such as its distinctive side-mounted air intakes and front bumper design, are likely to remain.
As with the 650S, a spider variant is planned with a folding hard top to go on sale in 2019.
