Medical examiner: Scott Weiland died from toxic mix of drugs
Testing shows that the former Stone Temple Pilots singer died from an overdose of several drugs, and alcohol, while also indicating that his history of addiction also played a role.
Weiland, a native of San Jose, died December 3 in Bloomington, Minnesota, in his bus while on tour with his band, The Wildabouts. The report said the time of death was 8:27 p.m. and that the death was accidental.
Along with other bands led by Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots in the early 1990s helped create the genre of grunge rock that is known for distorted guitar and often grim introspection.
Bloomington police said they found cocaine in Weiland’s bedroom and elsewhere on the bus.
The 48-year-old rocker and his band were scheduled to perform that night at the Medina Entertainment Center, but the concert was canceled due to low ticket sales, the Star Tribune reports.
The Stone Temple Pilots reunited in 2008 and split again in 2013. Weiland was also a member of hard-rock supergroup Velvet Revolver. In 1995, he was arrested after police found him carrying crack and heroin. He also pleaded guilty to felony heroin possession in 1998.
