Meeting between armed group, locals uncertain
A man dressed as continental army officer walks through the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016, near Burns, Ore. While the Federal Bureau of Investigation hasn’t appeared to have attempted any greater engagement than to tally a list of potential charges, Sheriff David Ward spoke against the group in a press conference yesterday, and went over the security measures put into place due to threats against him and other officials.
“Harney County, to a degree, owes [them] a “thank you” for taking a stand that needed to be made,” rancher Cory Shelman said at the town meeting on January 11. “If they did, they, too, would work to bring this situation to a peaceful close”.
Ammon Bundy is the son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy. They are there to oppose federal land-management policies. “I’m going to uphold my oath to the Constitution and sleep great at night knowing that I did everything in my power to ensure what our founding fathers did for us will not be lost”.
Palmer said he would not join the militants in Harney County, but he urged the federal government to comply with the armed outsiders’ demands. That cause includes turning control of federal land over to local ranchers.
Protester LaVoy Finicum told reporters the fence was making a local ranch “not profitable” and “hard to operate”. They’re demanding that federal lands be turned over to local authorities and that the Hammonds be freed.
Whatever the real numbers are, there little chance Ammon Bundy will ever pay the bill, and there’s no chance the emotional costs the people of Harney County have endured will ever be satisfied.
John McLean said he sides with the occupiers.
Other people are coming from afar to protest the protesters, according to KTVZ. And what do they want? He said “there should be a dialogue” but declined to give any specifics about the group’s exit plans.
“They’re terrorists”, he said. The standoff at the secluded federal building near Burns, Oregon is the latest example of how domestic terrorism is fueled by white supremacy.
Rodrique said the armed occupiers are “desecrating one of our sacred sites” with their presence at refuge.
“We’re not gonna let all your junk and hate-mail sidetrack us and we’re gonna continue to do what’s right for our country”, he says”. They did not say where the meeting would be held. “Because of that, there are no planned meetings or calls at this time”, Ward said.
