Meghan Trainor wins best new artist Grammy
Singer Meghan Trainor accepts the Best New Artist award at the 58th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California February 15, 2016. She beat out hopefuls Tori Kelly, James Bay, Courtney Barnett, and Sam Hunt.
Trainor – who isn’t new to us, as she’s from Nantucket – could barely talk as she accepted the award, bursting into tears as soon as her name was called. Trainor went on to thank her parents (her mom and dad) for always believing in her. She expressed her gratitude towards the Grammys, and blew a kiss from the podium. She was presented the trophy by last year’s victor Sam Smith.
After attempting to compose herself, Meghan explained just why she had such an incredibly emotional reaction to the win.
The pop singer has had an exciting 12 months, building on the success of her 2014 breakout hit All About That Bass.
“[Winning] would mean more than anything I’ve ever done”, she told MTV after the nominations were announced. My dad whispered, ‘You made it, ‘ before I walked up and I lost it. I love my family so much. But, it’s not what you may think because these were happy tears!
During the show, Trainor joined Demi Lovato, John Legend, Luke Bryan and Tyrese on stage for a tribute to Lionel Richie.
