Mel and Sue slipped some innuendo into their GBBO resignation letter
Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc will step down as hosts of The Great British Bake Off when the programme moves to Channel 4.
Mary Berry’s husband Paul Hunnings appears to have hinted that the Great British Bake Off star will NOT be moving with the show to Channel 4.
The programme, now airing on BBC1 on Wednesday evenings, is hosted by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.
Perkins and Giedroyc went on to give credit to the BBC, who “nurtured the show from its infancy and helped give it its distinctive warmth and charm”.
The statement, issued before the Channel 4 deal was announced, ended: “We hope Love Productions change their mind so that Bake Off can stay ad free on BBC One”.
In a statement, they said: ‘We’re not going with the dough. Both bakers have made no secret of the fact that they didn’t see a future with Bake Off if it were to move from the BBC. BBC was hopeful that Love productions would relinquish the rights to the show as it was “quintessentially BBC programme”.
She explained: “The BBC and Love Productions grew ‘.Bake Off’ from a quaint idea into a global hit”.
Dad-of-five Jamie Oliver is reportedly a contender for the role on GBBO, after it was revealed how much he and his family enjoy the Bake Off, and how much he would love to be a judge. But they’re at least listening to the proposition that Channel 4 are offering them, rather than just blindly ruling it out like Mel and Sue’.
Hunt also argues in Thursday’s article that bringing the show to Channel 4 stops it from going to a subscription service, such as Netflix or Sky. Channel 4 has confirmed to British media outlets that none of the four hosts have thus far signed on for a new season. They spend a huge amount of time together over the course of filming and outside that as well.
A Channel 4 spokesperson told CNN: “We fully respect Mel and Sue’s decision”.
The presenters opened the show singing a jovial ditty about the remaining bakers, before making a joke about cricket bats to mark batter week and viewers said the song proved the programme would not be the same without them.
The popular baking show has been thrown into chaos this week.
