Melissa McCarthy adds spice (and Spicer) as host of ‘SNL’
McCarthy’s official entry into the five-timers club got off to a bit of a rough start, though. As host, she didn’t bother with a monologue, but instead lead an audience member – and mother – on a tour backstage. It’s as anti-intellectual as a premise can get, but the absolute commitment McCarthy brings elevates the proceedings to unbelievable heights.
Melissa McCarthy is one of America’s funniest working comedians.
However, proceedings opened with her Spicer impersonation dismissing Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckerbee Sanders (played by Aidy Bryant), from her duties. She didn’t disappoint, turning up the heat with Alec Baldwin as President Donald Trump in a fiery viral moment.
Anticipation for the latest skit on Saturday (13 May) had grown throughout the week when McCarthy was seen filming on the streets of NY.
The subject then turns to whether he’s going to be fired.
The firestorm of Comey’s firing will be replaced by another scandal or lie soon enough, but the cumulative effect of the loss of credibility of Trump, Spicer, and the entire White House will be permanent.
Here are the rest of the SNL skits from May 13 worth checking out.
“And if he’s your friend, why does he make you come out here and humiliate yourself every day?”
She then proceeds to berate reporters asking about Trump’s decision to fire Comey and whether it was related to the FBI’s investigation into possible collusion between his campaign associates and Russian Federation.
“I’ve got to find Trump”. We’re just here for the ride, sigh. “I’m telling you exactly what President Trump told me”.
The Trump jokes continued on SNL, including a third degree level burn about Trump “diving into bushes without warning” from Colin Jost.
That made a great point that Spicer, who still bears responsibility for being complicit, is repeating and defending lies that originate with Trump.
Perhaps searching for some more serious commentary after the pie-in-the-face sketch, McCarthy joined lady comic powerhouses Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong and Sasheer Zamata in a parody of a film panel discussion “the state of women in film”. A reporter poses the question to McCarthy: “You must know this Russian Federation thing looks really bad?”.
“Can you just do this full time?” the press pool reporters plead. You’ll never be able to unsee it.
Next week’s SNL marks the season finale and will be hosted by Dwayne Johnson with musical guest Katy Perry.
