Melissa Rivers Steps Into Mother Joan’s Shoes For “Joy” Cameo
Melissa Rivers transforms in to her late mother Joan Rivers while taking part in her within the upcoming movie Joy. Melissa portrays Joan during her days as a QVC host when Joy Mangano (portrayed by Jennifer) appeared on the network to advertise her “Miracle Mop”, the product that would make her an industry legend.
“I thought, ‘Seriously when am I ever going to get to work with Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell?'” Melissa said. “I was like, ‘Okay, I’m in.'” The next obstacle was facing the “bizarre” experience of being made to look like her late mother.
“I can’t watch myself – especially like that”, she added, admitting she gets emotional watching the scene.
“She was a fan of [Jennifer’s] even though there was a situation once at Fashion Police where someone said something and Jennifer didn’t like it and kind of fired back”, Melissa said.
Because this marked her first high-profile film role, Melissa understandably had butterflies as she undertook the task, but she found support in her castmates.
Melissa, 47, told People how the role came about, crediting director David O. Russell for dreaming up the role. Speaking at the time on Today, Melissa said of her decision to take legal action against the clinic, she asked of the clinic, rhetorically, ‘How about paying attention to the vital signs?
The lovely lady says she even climbed into her mother’s hospital bed in those very last moments as the ventilators were turned off and Joan took in her last breath. “I want to go on as me” as QVC president Bradley is aghast.
Melissa Rivers followed her mom Joan Rivers’ footsteps into the entertainment business.
