Memorial service for fallen Hayward police Sgt. Scott Lunger draws thousands
Scott Lunger, gunned down while on duty, through the city Thursday morning before proceeding to Oracle Arena in Oakland for his funeral.
Police said Lunger, who was pronounced dead at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley a short time later, was shot without warning as he approached the driver’s side of the vehicle.
A police motorcade and Lunger’s family will leave Chapel of the Chimes on south Mission Boulevard at 8:45 a.m. Scott Lunger drew dignitaries, friends, family and police officers from across the nation, including Gov. Jerry Brown, to Oakland’s Oracle Arena Thursday morning. Mark Anthony Estrada, 21, was later arrested after being treated at a hospital.
“We’ve had tremendous support from the community”, Hayward police Lt. Eric Krimm said. The procession will head north on Mission Boulevard to Foothill Boulevard before turning left on A Street.
At approximately 1:00 PM, a procession of law enforcement officers will escort Sergeant Lunger from the Oracle Arena to his final resting place in Brentwood. The district attorney has filed special circumstances murder charges against the Oakland resident. The public is invited to attend. Urban said Lunger’s two daughters are doing as well as any daughters who have just lost their rock.
“We encourage them to come out and pay their respects. But we want them to find a safe spot”, he said.
The chief called the community incredible, leaving flowers and cards in honor of Lunger.
Urban also thanked neighboring law enforcement agencies for assisting with patrols, logistical support and food during “truly the darkest hour in our police department history”. The East Bay congressman paid tribute to Lunger on the House floor in Washington last Thursday.
“It’s attractive”, said Davis, who declined to give her first name for privacy reasons.
