Memphis among 6 to 8 schools on Big 12 expansion list
The Bulls reportedly are among six to eight schools still in consideration for two Big 12 expansion spots, according to a report from a former Boston Globe reporter. “We appreciate the opportunity to tell our story so you may get to know us better as we work with you throughout your process”.
This list includes the AAC’s Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis, UConn, South Florida and Central Florida, independent school BYU and, surprisingly, two teams from the ACC.it should be interesting what the Big 12 decides to do in the coming months.
The report cited no sources, but East Carolina indicated Wednesday it has been informed by Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby it’s no longer an expansion candidate.
The conference has been flirting with expansion since May, and is reportedly being influenced by ESPN and Fox, which own television rights to Big 12 games.
The letter, obtained through an open-records request, went on to say, “We believe our university has a great deal to offer a leading athletic conference”.
The Big 12 has been a 10-member league since Nebraska left for the Big Ten and Colorado left for the Pac-12 in 2011. Each finalist is expected to make a presentation to Big 12 officials in the next few weeks. In 2012 when Missouri and Texas A&M left for the SEC, the conference responded by adding TCU and West Virginia.
CSU made it clear to the Big 12 it wanted to be considered as an expansion candidate earlier this year.
