Memphis Police Officer Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop
IBTimes will not name the officer until confirmation that his family has been notified.
A Memphis Police officer has been killed after being shot during a traffic stop. The officer later died at a hospital.
A bystander used a police radio to report the shooting at 9:18 p.m., officials reported.
Police said the officer was conducting a traffic stop when someone inside the vehicle he pulled over opened fire, NBC affiliate WMC reported. No further details were released.
The suspect, who was in the auto stopped by the officer, remains at large, said Karen Rudolph, a spokeswoman for the Memphis Police Department. On December 14, 2012, Officer Martoya Lang was shot and killed while serving a warrant.
Armstrong said officers are grieving, adding that “this is just a reminder of how dangerous” the job is.
“We’ve been here before”, he said.
Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton Jr. told reporters Saturday that the incident “speaks volumes about the inherent danger of police work”. This is not only a hard time for me as a director, but for all the officers behind me and our city as well.’.
