Men In Custody After Shooting Of Black Lives Matter Protesters
Among their chants: “No justice, no peace”. When two NY City police officers were ambushed and killed last December, their funeral services were broadcast nationally and included a eulogy by Vice President Biden.
Police in Minneapolis arrested three men on Tuesday night, suspected of shooting five people participating in a Black Lives Matter protest.
In response to recent protests in Minneapolis and Chicago, Blacks Lives Matter announced they would stage a rally on Friday at Cincinnati Police headquarters in the West End. The victims – all black men ages 19 through 43 – were taken to hospitals.
The situation escalated Monday night when members of the protesters’ security team approached three men and one woman who were standing under a “Justice4Jamar” sign and asked what they were doing. According to the Star Tribune, Allen Lawrence “Lance” Scarsella III, 23, was arrested in Bloomington, while sources say Nathan Gustavsson, 21, and Daniel Macey, 26, turned themselves in.
A key issue during their visit will be whether authorities should release to the public videos of the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Jamar Clark a week ago.
There was no indication if the Wednesday closing was connected with the Clark case, terrorism or something else. The page’s “Likes” include several gun enthusiast pages, and several photos appear to show Scarsella at a shooting range. A Hennepin County District Court Judge has granted the county attorney’s office until Monday at noon to making a charging decision on the suspects. “I don’t want to perpetuate rumor”, said Rep. Keith Ellison (D) of the area where the shooting took place.
There was a heated exchange between the groups before the camera cuts to black.
When pressed about what “justice for Jamar Clark” means to them, the other supremacist answered, “All the folks here should get the justice and peace that they deserve”.
A statement from Clark’s brother, Eddie Sutton, urged the protests to stop.
“We understand the frustration of community members who may take actions not sanctioned by our group; this is a time of grief and rage and we remain committed to nonviolent direct action”, BLM said in a statement. “But in light of tonight’s shootings, the family feels out of imminent concern for the safety of the occupiers, we must get the occupation of the 4th Precinct ended and onto the next step”. During the video, they also reference the deadly November 15 shooting of Clark, who was fatally wounded during an encounter with police.
“We will not bow to fear or intimidation”, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis’ Miski Noor said. On Thursday, 4th Precinct Shut Down will celebrate #BlackGiving, an all volunteer and donation-based celebration. He said the officers should face charges and “go through the same procedures that we do”. “We ain’t scared of domestic terrorists”.
Speakers thanked the protesters at the 4th Precinct for bringing about change and leading to the release of the names of the officers involved in Clark’s death. Most coverage has focused on the two suspects who have been arrested in connection with the shooting, and the week-long sit-in that the protesters had participated in leading up to the violence Monday night. Witnesses to the police shooting, including a 10-year-old child, have all maintained that Clark was handcuffed when he was shot “execution style”, while police initially claimed he was not. That prompted marchers to chant: “Handcuffed?” A Mankato police officer identified as “Officer Levin” called Minneapolis police and said Scarsella called him and told him he had shot five people, admitting what happened twice during their five-minute conversation.
